ryan beck, here and there: 50 days222gallery is pleased to present a closing reception of here and there: 50 days, new works by Philadelphia artist Ryan Beck, July 25th from 6-9pm. His colorful forms reference the vibrancy of the city and the freshness of the graffiti that decorates it, while the overlaid linear drawing plays on childhood memories where rather than drawing inside the lines, Beck creates new lines and boundaries that are meant to be crossed in the transitions from form to ground. By creating a body of work in the 50 days preceding the opening, and continuing to modify and expand the show over the 50 days following, his colorful abstract compositions and installation connects fine art and pop-culture to the local street scene, creating a visual activity that represents the energy he experiences in that span of time, in his studio, and in the city of Philadelphia. "My work has always revolved around relationships with one's environment and the characters that occupy these spaces and their everlasting impact on one another. This show reflects the significant changes in my life since my show at 222gallery in Los Angeles in January. Up until these new works, all previous figures resided in the present. These new paintings consist of figures that are broken down by lines that are preoccupied by experiences of the past and the fascination of the control of one's future." -Ryan BeckRyan Beck obtained his BA in Painting from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and has exhibited in various galleries in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York City. Ryan lives and works in Philadelphia and is currently couch surfing at the Compound, where his studio is outside of Chinatown. When he is not painting, he is looking up movie memorabilia on eBay that he'll never buy, skateboarding, or trying to convince people why they should watch the movie, Blue Velvet. This is his first Philadelphia solo show.

The Longest Funeral Songfeaturing collaborative works byMonica Canilao and Kyle RansonOpening Reception August 1, 2008Through August 29, 2008In collaboration with The Art Syndicate, Space 1026 is pleased to present a collaborative installation by San Francisco Bay area artists, Monica Canilao and Kyle Ranson.This body of work/instalation is the culmination of a longtime friendship and shared vision of Canilao and Ranson.The artists sum up the idea of the show this way, "One Long Funeral Song" addresses the clashes and minglings of two magicks. the black, vampiric conjurings of colonialism and the nature magic of indigenous, poor and creative peoples... the contrast between secret societies and open-armed, cooperitive communities. Monica Canilao and Kyle Ranson build a world around the hope that perhaps a third and beautiful magick could be born from this long and bloodied struggle. Monica Canilao works with found objects and materials such as paper and fabric to weave sewn together structures that explore space, community and life and figures, both animal and human. According to Canilao, she "understands that even the most fleeting moments can be the most poignant ones, and so, she is fearless in her use of disintegrating materials such as paper, fiber, love and hope. What presents in her work is a feeling of spontaneity and mysticism.Monica received her BFA from CCA.(C). She has exhibited at Galeria de la Raza, White Walls, Needles and Pens, 111 Minna, the Luggage Store in San Francisco; The Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn, Jen Beckman Gallery in NY, Black Rat Press and 29 Gillespie in London. Canilao will be participating in upcoming exhibitions at Roebling Hall in NYC with David Ellis as well as artist Swoon's Hudson River project. Kyle Damon Ranson was born July 31st 1969 in Manhattan. With an encouraging hippie mother, he began to draw and paint in early childhood and by the time he was in high school, he was taking life drawing classes at the Lyme academy in Connecticut. He attended three semesters at the Maryland Institute College of Art and then dropped out to immerse himself in the arts and music scene in Baltimore. In 1994 he moved to San Francisco and became a part of the underground punk scene in the Mission. He began to exhibit his paintings in 1998 and has slowly become a pillar of the San Francisco art world. He has shown in New York and London and had several solo shows in San Francisco. His bold paintings often deal with extreme subject matter and can demand alot of the viewer yet there is a delicacy to his work that comes through most in his portraiture. MESSAGE FROM THE MEGAWORDS CREATIVE GROUP
The mission of the Megawords project is to document our surroundings and experience, to have a voice free from the noise of commercialization and competing novelties, and to create an establishment that encourages an open and active dialogue between Megawords and the community at large. The storefront exhibition space will be a public expression of this mission, and it will foster a unique spirit of collaboration among the projects participants and audience that extends beyond the traditional role of art magazines.This storefront will serve as Megawords' focal point of activity for the duration of one month: a period of intense activity including permanent and rotating installations, guest speakers, musical performances, workshops and film screenings. In tandem with this creative period, we will release two special-edition printed issues of Megawords that will draw direct inspiration from the space, the artists and audience.Participants include Zoe Strauss, Alex Lukas, Steve Powers, William Pym, Maysles Films, Matt Schwartz, Ted Passon, KR, Isaac Lin, Adams and KEGR, Wesley Eisold, Hamburger Eyes, The Favourite Sons and many more.
